It was a big night on Monday for all three Desert Vista Boy’s Basketball squads, as each comfortably beat St. Mary’s teams.
The DV Frosh started the night with a strong, 71-35 win over the Knights in our Freshmen players High School Basketball debuts.
The second victory of the night belonged to the DV JV, as they beat St. Mary’s 52-39. Led by Jackson Risi’s 13 points, the JV Thunder jumped out to an early 15 point lead, and despite a second quarter dry spell, never fell behind. Lucas Bass contributed 8 points, Samuel Bass had 7, and Jace Denis dropped 5. Thunder Center James Gossett, led all rebounders with 8 boards.
By the time 7pm came around, an almost full, and very vocal crowd watched, as the DV Varsity boys followed the night’s trend, jumping to an early lead and never looking back, despite some very good 3 point shooting by the Knights. DV’s Wesley Harris led all scorers with 17, including at least three monster dunks, the most dramatic of which ended in a technical foul, after the Senior’s exuberance led him to hang onto the rim, and slap the backboard before returning to the ground. The approval from the DV crowd overshadowed Harris’s mistake, though, as they obviously considered the single penalty free-throw well worth seeing the Senior’s first two-handed slam of the season.
The Varsity Thunder had four scorers in double digits against St. Mary’s, with Junior, Tyrek Chambers dropping 16, Senior big man Christian Anigwe contributing 15 and Senior Alijah Gammage scoring 10 points.
At the final buzzer, the scoreboard showed the Varsity Thunder had beaten the St. Mary’s Knights, 73-55.
All in all, it was an excellent season opener for each of the DV teams, raising high expectations for all three!
Next on the schedule, are the home openers against Valley Vista, on Tuesday, November 28th.
